Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment

Kelowna responds to extreme weather

Client

City of Kelowna

Population

144,576

Schedule

2022–2023

The Problem

Over the past decade, Kelowna has lived through a devastating flood and several wildfires. As temperatures warm and weather gets more extreme, the community needs to figure out how to prepare.

The Problem

How will heat waves and other climate hazards affect people and infrastructure in Kelowna?

50+

days above 30°C by 2080

23%

decrease in precipitation by 2080

The Solution

Using ScenaAdaptation, SSG identified how often and how severely different extreme weather events would affect people and infrastructure in Kelowna. The City combined the findings with SSG’s climate mitigation work to develop the Climate Resilient Kelowna Strategy, a climate adaptation and mitigation plan to reduce emissions and climate risks.

Outcome

Key Takeaways

Every neighbourhood in Kelowna is vulnerable to climate hazards, especially floods, wildfires, and heat waves.

Increasing tree canopy coverage by 5% could protect over 14,000 residents from heat waves by 2040.

Without intervention, more seniors and low-income households will be pushed to areas at higher risk of flooding.

Kelowna must be prepared with adapted and resilient city systems and infrastructure to protect people and ecosystems, and to enable speedy recovery after severe climate events.
