Climate action & energy transition planning is land use planning
Webinar
12 June 2026
Land use plan updates are opportunities to incorporate energy and climate considerations into how we develop our cities.
As energy costs rise and extreme weather events become more common, what policy solutions can local governments turn to that ensure affordability and safety for residents?
Join Jeremy Murphy and Jennifer Fix as they explore how Official Plans and Official Community Plans are powerful but underused tools for climate action. Drawing on their experience helping municipalities integrate climate considerations into official plans, Jeremy and Jennifer will walk through how land use decisions shape how resilient, affordable, and livable our communities will be for decades to come. They’ll cover how compact, complete communities reduce costs for municipalities and residents alike, how to plan for climate hazards through zoning and development permit areas, and what it takes to get these changes implemented across departments, with community input, and with equity at the centre.

Principal, Urbanism and Engagement
Ahne Studio
Jennifer is the founding principal of Ahne Studio, an urbanism and engagement practice working at the intersection of place-making (and place-keeping), climate action, and equity. Rooted in participatory design, her practice co-creates the plans with the communities who are intended to be served by them.
Jennifer has worked with dozens of communities across Canada on plans for waterfronts, public spaces, transportation infrastructure, neighbourhoods, and entire towns, cities, and regions. She specializes in participatory urbanism, evidence-based design, and land use policy and growth management. Committed to addressing the climate crisis head on, she has led several Official Community Plan processes that deeply integrate greenhouse gas emissions modeling and climate action.
Her practice has taken her from small town main streets to some of the most significant redevelopment projects in MetroVancouver. Recent projects range from Ladysmith’s net-zero emissions OCP to Vancouver’s Jericho Lands / ʔəy̓alməxʷ / Iy̓álmexw Neighbourhood, the largest Indigenous-led real estate project in Canada.
