Climate-Aligned Land Use Planning

We use meaningful engagement, detailed scenario analysis, and insightful mapping to create well-informed, defensible land use plans, policies, and implementation frameworks. 

Our approach empowers officials and community members to compare and contrast  policy effects  on infrastructure, transportation, energy and climate systems, as well as community behaviour. With this analysis, decision-makers can choose land-use and development approaches that improve quality of life, affordability, and equity while reducing pollution and building resilience to extreme weather.

SSG was part of the planning team that developed the Town of Ladysmith, BC’s award-winning Official Community Plan. SSG modelled the impacts of three urban policy scenarios on greenhouse gas emissions, energy demand, land use, and costs so the Town could create climate-informed policies that reduce pollution and risk.

The Plan won the Planning Institute of British Columbia’s 2024 Excellence in Small Town and Rural Planning Silver Award. It set a new standard for community plans in BC by thoughtfully combining climate action, housing and energy affordability, resilient infrastructure, and Indigenous Peoples’ perspectives.
