ScenaHourly

ScenaHourly tracks the hourly implications of potential energy projects and policies to help governments and utilities decide how to meet local power needs while greening their energy systems.

Our Tool

ScenaHourly supports governments and utilities with the energy transition. The model leverages data on buildings, vehicles, energy systems, and market trends to provide projections of the impact of energy projects and policies on hourly demand and supply, costs, and climate pollution.

The outputs are designed to assess the potential impact of changes to the energy system—like bringing solar farms online, closing coal-fired electricity plants, or a surge in adoption of EVs—to help decision-makers identify the optimal mix of energy sources, programs, and policies to transform local energy systems.

ScenaHourly

The model provides detailed, spatial insights to build a reliable, affordable power supply while reducing emissions.

Why ScenaHourly?

It offers hourly insights. The model helps identify when and how a community’s energy demand is likely to exceed supply, so decision-makers can identify alternate energy sources and take other steps to prevent outages. It also highlights when supply exceeds demand, providing opportunities to sell energy or store it for later use.

It provides precise spatial analysis. The model pinpoints exactly where energy demand is coming from and how it differs across different types of buildings, EV chargers, and other infrastructure at different times of day and year—information that’s critical for developing comprehensive energy supply solutions and policies to reduce demand.

It enables strategic decision-making. The model assesses the potential impact of and interactions between green transportation policies, energy efficiency measures, different mixes of renewable energy, distributed energy resources, and more so governments and utilities can decide what clean energy sources to develop and how to incorporate them into the grid.

Scena in Action

Saint John Energy, a utility supplying electricity to the city of Saint John, NB, is aiming to provide net-zero power by 2030 and beyond. To succeed, it must understand what energy demand looks like in the long run.

SSG used ScenaHourly to prepare low, medium, and high forecasts for hourly electricity demand in Saint John through to 2045. Saint John Energy is using the information to identify how to prepare its grid for the future.
