Tacoma GHG Inventory and Climate Environmental Plan

Climate Mitigation Plan

A custom GHG inventory tool helps Tacoma track climate action

Client

City of Tacoma

Population

218,000

Schedule

2020-2021

The Problem

In 2019, Tacoma City Council and Tacoma Public Utilities declared a climate emergency and committed to net-zero community emissions by 2050. They tasked SSG with taking stock of the community’s greenhouse gas emissions and helping Tacoma figure out how to reach its goal.

The Problem

How can Tacoma meet its climate targets as the community grows?

53%

projected population growth between 2019-2050

+49%

projected increase in vehicle ownership between 2019-2050

*between 2019-2050.

The Solution

With SSG’s support, Tacoma updated its greenhouse gas inventory and modeled several scenarios to identify 64 emission reduction actions in the industrial, building, transportation, and waste sectors. Tacoma City Council passed the Tacoma Climate Action Plan in 2021 with widespread public support.

SSG developed a customized GHG inventory tool for Tacoma as a key element of the project. The tool organized and tabulated relevant data across 10 municipal sectors to make inventory updates simple and straightforward. City staff continue to use the tool to track progress on the climate action plan. The GHG inventory generated by the tool is compliant with the Global Protocol for Community-Scale GHG Emissions and meets international disclosure requirements.

The Outcome

Tacoma’s GHG Inventory identified:

1.6M

MtCO2 GHG emissions in 2019

18

GHG emissions sources across 10 municipal sectors

The price of not taking action, both in economic terms and in the potential cost of human health and life, particularly for Tacoma’s most vulnerable populations, is not only fiscally irresponsible but morally unacceptable.
