Our Tools

ScenaLocale

ScenaLocale supports municipalities, developers, and design teams with optimizing energy systems and reducing emissions in existing and proposed neighbourhoods.

POWERED BY WHATIF? TECHNOLOGIES

Our Tool

ScenaLocale provides guidance for positioning buildings and transportation infrastructure, efficiency standards, and renewable energy technologies for existing and proposed developments to create carbon-neutral and climate-positive neighbourhoods.

The model analyzes options for building siting and efficiency standards, transportation integration, and energy generation and storage by leveraging data on existing and proposed buildings, renewable energy and storage technologies, and transportation systems. The outputs can be used to explore and compare the energy requirements, emissions impact, and financial costs and benefits of different development options.

ScenaLocale

ScenaLocale determines the best combination of neighbourhood-level building, energy, and transportation solutions for net-zero communities.

Why ScenaLocale?

It supports smart investments. ScenaLocale clarifies how efficient buildings need to be and which renewable energy systems to implement to lower emissions while maximizing savings.

It enables innovative developments. ScenaLocale identifies the technical requirements and costs for achieving carbon-neutral and carbon-positive neighbourhoods, which offset more greenhouse gas emissions than they emit.

It provides spatial insights. ScenaLocale identifies where to locate buildings and transportation infrastructure to maximize energy savings while reducing environmental impacts—like positioning buildings to use the sun to reduce heating needs or exploring the effectiveness of a congestion charge for protecting local habitat.

Scena in Action

Ookwemin Minising, a new development on waterfront industrial land in Toronto, is slated to be one of the first climate-positive neighbourhoods in the world, meaning it will offset more greenhouse emissions than it produces.

SSG used ScenaLocale to support Waterfront Toronto, the organization leading the development, with neighbourhood design. The model analyzed and compared the emission and cost impacts of different mixes of energy generation, energy storage, and building technologies, as well as building and transportation arrangements.
