SSG’s CH4 Pathways Tool Recognized with APA Award

We won an award for our work developing a tool to help governments reduce methane.

31st March 2025

The CH4 Pathways Tool, developed by SSG and the Global Methane Hub, is helping national and regional governments in South America cut methane emissions. Now, it has won the Policy, Law, and Tool Award from the American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division.

On March 30, the American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division recognized SSG and the Global Methane Hub with an Award for Excellence in Sustainability for developing CH4 Pathways, a multilingual tool to support policymakers with methane reduction.

Our Marketing and Communications Director, Alia Dharssi, accepted the award—in the Policy, Law, and Tool category—at a reception on the sidelines of the National Planning Conference in Denver, CO. She led content development for the platform, which makes it easier for policymakers to learn about the causes of methane emissions, as well as realistic, fast, and cost-effective solutions for reducing them. Our Senior Consultant Carla Gallardo led the project while Senior Application Developer Noah Purves-Smith led development of the interactive platform.

Addressing methane (CH4) emissions is the fastest way to slow down global warming, as it warms the planet 86 times more quickly than carbon dioxide. Reducing methane emissions also reduces deaths from respiratory and other pollution-caused illnesses.

The centrepiece of the platform is the interactive Pathways Explorer Tool, which is loaded with data and emission projections for every country in South America. Visitors can explore the source of methane emissions in the agricultural, energy, and waste sectors for each country. Then, they can test how various solutions would affect emissions, as well as how much they cost, how much savings they generate, and their social impact. With this cost-benefit analysis of actions in hand, as well as information on how proven solutions work, policymakers have information to push action forward.

A global push is underway for countries to urgently reduce methane emissions, with many signing on to the Global Methane Pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030. SSG is proud that our work is at the forefront of efforts to provide resources to enable action.

CH4 Pathways Tool

An award winning tool that supports methane reduction in South America

Methane heats the planet more quickly than carbon dioxide. It pollutes the air and harms our lungs. Reducing methane will improve life expectancy and our quality of life.

There are realistic, fast, and effective solutions to reduce methane. Many can help governments and families save money while improving economic development and public health.

The CH4 Pathways Explorer makes it possible to understand the major sources of methane in all of the countries within South America. More importantly, it also shows what can be done about it and what the most effective solutions are.

Developed with the Global Methane Hub.
