How to use the GHG Calculator Tool for Municipal Projects
Webinar

24th April 2025
How can municipal staff coordinate emissions reductions across all departments and all operational decisions? The GHG Calculator for Municipalities is a free tool that municipal staff can use to understand the climate impact of their decisions.
The GHG Calculator for Municipalities is a free tool that municipal staff can use to quantify the climate impact of their decisions. The tool, which is a Microsoft Excel add-in, can help integrate climate assessments into project and policy decision making processes.
Curious about how this works? Aishah Mohd.Isa and Noah Purves-Smith explain how the tool came to be developed, and demo how to use the tool for various types of municipal projects in this very hands-on webinar.
Customize the GHG Calculator
The GHG Calculator is designed for municipalities to integrate climate considerations into municipal decision-making processes across all departments. Customizing the tool enables municipal decision makers to accurately evaluate the greenhouse gas impacts of policies and projects in their locale, ensuring climate considerations can be incorporated into every municipal decision.
This free version of the tool includes energy and emissions data from Calgary, Canmore, Durham, Fredericton, Hamilton, Mississauga, Ottawa, Saint John, Vaughan, Vernon, and West Vancouver. SSG can customize the tool for municipalities across the Americas and train municipal staff to use it.

Senior Application Developer | SSG
Noah (he/him) is a climate activist disguised as a software developer. His work ranges from the system architecture and back-end development of modelling platforms, to building front-end tools to bring the models to life. He brings years of experience in modelling cumulative land-use effects, ecosystem goods and services, and integrated resources management as the architect and senior application developer on several spatial modeling tools that have been used globally. Noah is keenly interested in sustainability and built a passive house on a permaculture property using local materials. He enjoys playing piano, sailing, and mountain biking with his family when he’s not keeping tabs on his two boys, flock of heritage chickens, and cats Pippi and Max (not necessarily in that order).

Aishah (she/her) supports analysis and engagement on mitigation, implementation, and carbon budgeting projects at SSG. Her work is informed by her experience coordinating climate and energy-related projects in Malaysia and the broader Asia-Pacific region. She has collaborated with academics, utilities, research institutes, and officials in municipal and federal governments. Prior to joining SSG, Aishah led climate action planning and implementation at a rural municipality, advancing the municipality through four out of the five Partners for Climate Protection milestones in three years. Aishah adores cats but can’t live with one, and so opts to use cat emojis and avatars whenever possible.
What is the Municipal Toolkit
The Municipal Toolkit is a suite of free SSG-made tools for municipalities to use for climate action planning and implementation. The tools can be used to explore, calculate, and compare energy and emissions data.
